Presenting The All-New 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE
Sep. 12, 2018 4:00 AM ET by Jay Traugott Reveal / 50 Comments Sleeker, more luxurious, and more tech-filled than ever. Following yesterday's final teaser image, the all-new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE has officially been revealed. The luxury crossover SUV is sleeker, bigger, and more fuel efficient than ever and comes packing plenty of safety and convenience technologies. The German automaker says the five most important innovations the new GLE (formerly known as the M-Class prior to 2015) brings to the table are E-Active Body Control, Active Tailback Assist, Turn-off function, 4matic all-wheel drive, and improved seating comfort. E-Active body control is an active suspension using a 48-volt electrical system integrated with an air suspension. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz It enables both the spring and damping forces to be controlled at each wheel. In other words, the system not only counteracts body roll but also pitching and squat. Active Tailback Assist is interesting in that allows the vehicle to recognize tailbacks at an early stage and driver support in stop-and-go traffic up to about 37 mph. The Turn-off function applies directly to Active Brake Assist. So basically if there's a possibility of collision with oncoming traffic, the new GLE will brake during a maneuver. Mercedes' 4matic all-wheel-drive system with torque on demand is, for the first time, offered with six and eight-cylinder engines. And like we already mentioned, the new GLE is bigger than before thanks to a longer wheelbase, resulting in increased interior space and an optional third-row bench seat. Second-row legroom and headroom have increased, and there's more luggage capacity, especially when the second and third rows are folded flat. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz As with all recent Mercedes interiors, the 2020 GLE's is gorgeous and quite futuristic. There are now two huge high-resolution screens front and center. There are fewer buttons than ever, as most functions have been regulated to the touchscreen interface. A few highlights include a learning capability that, combined with artificial intelligence, can anticipate what features passengers will desire next. For example, if you tend to call someone on a specific day and time of the week while driving home from work, the system makes note of that and will suggest to the driver to make the phone call whenever that time rolls around. It even suggests radio stations based on user experience. Among the many creature comforts are six-way power rear seats and a giant head-up display measuring 17.8 x 5.9-inches with a resolution of 720 x 240 pixels. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Under the hood of the base GLE350 is the familiar 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The GLE 450 comes powered by a six-cylinder systematically electrified with 48-volt technology, totaling 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to that 48-volt mild hybrid system, an additional 21 hp is available for short bursts, such as passing in traffic. Both engines are paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Exterior styling is quite something, marked by short overhangs, a more upright grille, and chrome-plated trim. It's certainly a more organic look compared to its immediate predecessor with sleek sheetmetal inspired by the C-Class and AMG GT. Official pricing will be announced as we get closer to the 2020 Mercedes GLE launch date, likely happening next spring. We expect to see the new GLE in the flesh for the first time next month at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Join The Discussion
