Street Walking Ferrari 458 Challenge Is One Rare Bird

It is a race-ready version of the Ferrari 458 Italia, built to compete in the one-make Ferrari Challenge race series, which is much adored by rich men and filled with funny crashes. But seriously, the 458 Challenge is a legitimate race car, so seeing one driving on public roads is a bit of a treat. When it debuted in 2010 Ferrari said that it was capable of lapping its famous Fiorano test track in 1:16.5 which is just 0.2 of a second slower than the bonkers Enzo-based FXX. Weight was slashed through the use of paper thin body panels, carbon fiber replacement parts, and all the glass was switched for polycarbonate panels with sliding slots for windows. The cockpit bore next to no resemblance to the road-going car, save for the Alcantara dashboard, with a racing cage appearing along with a racing spec seat. In fact, judging by the front splitter, hood pins, and large rear wing, this actually looks like a 458 EVO with side mirrors and a number plate bolted on, also, check out those chunky center locking lugs. Besides the compliance changes to make it road legal, the owner also upgraded the output from the car's 4.5-liter V8. When the 458 Challenge rolled out of Maranello it was making 569 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque, but this one allegedly makes somewhere in the realm of 700 hp. We don't know what kind of owner felt the need to make their road-legal Ferrari race car even faster, but kudos to them.
