Mercedes AMG GT R Roadster Spied For The First Time

Aug. 19, 2018 2:35 PM ET by Martin Bigg Spy Shots / 3 Comments If the AMG GT C Roadster isn't powerful enough, a topless GT R is coming. If you're looking to buy a Mercedes-AMG GT, you have plenty of choice right now. There's the GT Coupe and Roadster, GT C Coupe and Roadster, GT S Coupe, and the track-focused GT R Coupe. If, however, you want a roadster that's more powerful than the GT C, these new photos sent by our spy photographers confirm that Mercedes-AMG is cooking up a GT R Roadster to further expand the line-up. While the prototype is covered in camouflage, you don't need to use a lot of imagination to know what it will look like. CarBuzz As expected, it looks practically identical to its hard-top sibling, but one noticeable difference is that the Roadster has a large fixed wing instead of a retractable one like the Coupe. This doesn't exactly improve the car's looks, but it's a necessity to keep the car stable at high speed. Elsewhere, we can see all the usual AMG design traits, such as an aggressive front fascia with a Panamericana grille, a rear diffuser, and carbon-ceramic brakes. Expect the GT R coupe's mechanical upgrades to carry over too, such as stiffer suspension, rear-wheel steering, and a limited-slip differential. CarBuzz Under the hood, the Roadster should use the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 as the GT R Coupe. In the Coupe, the V8 unit produces 585 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to hit 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 197 mph, so expect the Roadster to offer similar performance. The GT R Coupe was introduced back in 2016, so the Roadster variant has been a long time coming. After the Roadster goes on sale next year, the next model to join the GT line-up will hopefully be the long-awaited GT R Black Series, which will no doubt spawn a Roadster variant as well.
