Mercedes Baby G Wagon Seen Testing On The Nurburgring

Aug. 15, 2018 11:30 AM ET by Jared Rosenholtz Spy Shots / 6 Comments But it doesn't really look like a G Wagon. Mercedes finally revealed the all-new A-Class sedan, which will be making its first-ever appearance in the US market. The new A-Class will spawn eight new models, which will likely include a new CLA and GLA, and has also long been rumored to underpin an upcoming "Baby G Wagon," which will be called the GLB. Now this so-called "Baby G Wagon" has been seen testing on the Nurburgring, and based on first impressions alone, we are underwhelmed. We doubt this test mule sports a finalized design, but from what we can see through the camo, the GLB looks more like a more modern interpretation of the old GLK than a miniature version of the G-Class. Yes, it does sport a boxier shape than other small Mercedes SUVs such as the GLA, but it is nowhere near what we expected. Where are the exposed door hinges? Where is the full-size spare tire hanging off the tailgate? Oftentimes test mules sport body panels from other models in order to hide the final design, so perhaps the production car will have more design elements from the new G-Class. The GLB is expected to be powered by the same engine as the A-Class, meaning a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four producing 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque mated to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. We don't have any shots of the interior, but it will likely share the new Mercedes MBUX infotainment system that debuted in the A-Class. The reveal of the GLB is still a long way away. Expect to see an official debut around summer 2019.
