2020 Ford Explorer Engines Exposed What' s Under The Hood

Thanks to some good snooping by Jalopnik, an order guide has been leaked regarding the engine lineup for the upcoming redesigned 2020 Ford Explorer. Set to ride on a new rear-wheel-drive based platform with optional all-wheel drive, the 2020 Explorer will also continue to serve America's finest as the next generation Explorer Interceptor, whose engine details have also been leaked. So without further ado… The police version will be offered with a choice of three powertrains, a 3.3-liter V6, 3.3-liter V6 hybrid, and a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. All three will be paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford For those of us who aren't police officers, the regular civilian 2020 Explorer will be available with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the same 3.3-liter V6 with or without hybrid components as above, as well as the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. Unfortunately at this time, we don't have horsepower, torque, or performance figures for any engine. We do know there will be an Explorer ST, so it'd make sense for the twin-turbo V6 to be used here. As we previously learned, the new Explorer will also serve as the basis for the upcoming Lincoln Aviator, which was shown in concept form last April at New York. Despite returning to its body-on-frame roots, so to speak, with standard RWD, the new Explorer will continue riding on a unibody platform, a change that happened when the current Explorer debuted back in 2011. And thanks to CarBuzz reader Tyler, we have an interior spy shot showing a large touchscreen display and digital gauges behind the steering wheel.
