Volkswagen' s Grand California Van Strangely Won' t Be Sold In California

Volkswagen is set to show off a new commercial vehicle at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf from August 24 to September 2. The vehicle in question is a camper van called the Grand California, which ironically won't be sold in California. Despite literally being named after one of the 50 US states, Volkswagen will not even sell this van in the US market. This is a bit of a shame because the Grand California has a lot of cool features that American camping enthusiasts would love. Volkswagen The Grand California competes in the six-meter class of vans and features a kitchen, sleeping area, bunk bed for children, and even a working bathroom. Volkswagen also sells a regular California van, which does not have a built-in bathroom. The last time Volkswagen sold a campervan in the US was 2003, so it has been some time since you could buy one new. American buyers typically like their motorhomes to be much larger than Grand California, so the decision not to sell it in the US doesn't really surprise us. Volkswagen We know we won't be getting Grand California in the US, but this does give us a small taste of what we can expect in the upcoming ID Buzz, the long-awaited replacement the iconic Microbus. Of course, the ID Buzz will be smaller, it won't feature its own bathroom, and will be powered by an all-electric drivetrain, not a range of gas an diesel engines. Still, the Grand California may show us a few features that could make their way to the ID Buzz. Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen A pop-open camper with skylights could be a nice feature on the ID Buzz, as could window blinds and flyscreens. This way the ID Buzz could still be used for camping. We'd also love to see swiveling front seats so the van could be transformed into a nice hangout space.
