Why Is The Latest Tesla Software Update Disabling Autopilot For Some Owners

Case in point: Teslas. Generally speaking, the Tesla Model S, Model X, and Model 3 have excellent overall track records. Sure, somethings may go wrong, but Tesla is typically very quick to provide an over-the-air update. According to a report that originated at Jalopnik, however, the latest Tesla update may have inadvertently disabled the semi-autonomous Autopilot function on some owners' cars. Tesla owners are some of the most active auto owners out there today, and they compare notes regularly on various forums. In this case, many realized the Autopilot system in their EVs no longer worked following the latest update. One user said that his Model 3 now keeps stating a message on the display screen that his emergency braking, regenerative braking, and traction control are not working. Fortunately, Tesla seems to be fully aware of the problem and promised affected owners it would roll out another update this past Friday that should fix the issue. Autopilot may be more of a convenience feature, tech such as traction control and emergency braking definitely are not. Ironically, the update, which has been rolling out over the past week or so, was initially supposed to improve Autopilot to make it more responsive. And it did just that for some, such as making lane changes faster and smoother. Earlier this month, CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter Tesla owners will soon be receiving version 9. What's exciting about this update is that it'll supposedly change the vertical screen in the Model S and Model X to be more like the Model 3's floating horizontal screen. But for now, it appears Tesla engineers are still rolling out the fix for what's likely the final update for version 8. No accidents have been reported and hopefully it'll remain that way.
