Should We Start To Get Excited About A BMW X7 M

Aug. 20, 2018 1:40 PM ET by John Tallodi / 5 Comments The upcoming X7M flagship could feature a twin-turbo V12 or even hybrid power The X7 may not even be on sale yet but it appears that the management team at BMW are already seriously considering an M variant. According to BMW Blog, this has been in the pipeline for a while but whether it will be a full-fat M car or an M Performance model remains to be seen. It is not an altogether unexpected move from the Bavarian manufacturer. Purists will by now have largely given up the fight to keep the M badge solely for properly sporting models, the sales success of vehicles like the X5 M have seen to that. While the X7 will be the largest and heaviest BMW product to be offered in M trim yet, it is not exactly breaking new ground this time. Handout, BMW Rivals from Mercedes and Range Rover already have overpowered challengers of their own in the shape of the 577-hp AMG GLS 63 and Supercharged SVR models respectively. We can expect the usual turbocharged inline-six and V8 models to power the entry-level and mid-range X7s but the 600-hp twin-turbo 6.6-liter V12 currently reserved solely for the M760Li may well make its way into a future X7 M version. The strong push for electrification in the BMW model range may mean a hybrid M variant could be in the cards too. BMW The X7 iPerformance concept that was revealed last year showed that a hybrid or fully electric X7 will definitely be joining the line up in the future. It would be interesting to see an electrically assisted version of the current M5's twin-turbo 600-hp 4.4-liter engine in an X7M. In the meantime, the X7 is expected to be fully revealed this November at the Los Angeles motor show.
