Honda Recalls Insight For Lack Of Hindsight

Honda Motor Co. will be issuing a recall for 230,000 Insight and Accord models due to software glitches that can cause malfunctions with the reverse camera display. In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that some Accord models could exhibit issues with the navigation system, head-up display, and even the on-board compass. Shifting into reverse, for example, could disable the camera entirely. While that can be frustrating, none of these issues are mission critical and there have been no reported incidences stemming from the software glitches. Honda The reverse camera issues do mean that these vehicles do not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards (FMVSS) requirements and Honda will be affecting the repairs, free of charge to customers, starting in November. Unlike the Takata Airbag debacle that Honda has been embroiled in, this recall will affect far fewer vehicles and all that is required is a simple reprogramming of the display unit software. Honda Honda With Tesla spearheading over-the-air (OTA) updates on all of its vehicles, and a number of other manufacturers slowly following suit, this kind of issue will be just the sort of thing that should be very easily resolved in the future. For now, though, Honda will be contacting affected owners who will then have to book their vehicles into a dealer to get the work done. Until then, be sure to look behind you before reversing out of a car park, a basic skill most motorists have long since forgotten thanks to our reliance on the myriad driver assistance systems that are part and parcel of the modern driving experience.
