Is The Ford GT Attempting A New Nurburgring Lap Record

Earlier this year, Ford adamantly declared that it isn't interested in chasing lap records with the GT. So why has a Ford GT been spotted tearing around the Nurburgring? The following video shows the GT lapping the Nurburgring, and it clearly isn't being driven at a pedestrian pace. In fact, the car appears to be in Race Mode, which lowers the ride height by nearly two inches and sets the wing for maximum downforce and air braking. This isn't a private owner taking their GT out for a performance run, either, as a company spokesperson has confirmed to Road and Track the car is owned by Ford. Incidentally, it has the same license plate as the model shown at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. The car also appears to be testing during an industry pool session, which bans tourists from the track to allow manufacturers to put the latest cars through their paces. Clearly, Ford didn't want there to be any traffic slowing the GT down during the lap. Tellingly, the car has also been fitted with roof-mounted antennas, which is likely linked to a device recording lap times. If Ford is trying to set a new Nurburgring lap record, it seems unlikely that the GT will beat the current record set by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, which lapped the Green Hell in six minutes and 44.97 seconds. The SVJ's naturally aspirated V12 produces 760 horsepower and benefits from Lamborghini's advanced Active Aerodynamics system, whereas the GT's 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 delivers 647 hp and 550 lb-ft. Alternatively, Ford could be testing new components for a new, even faster GT. Either way, color us intrigued.
