Mangled Porsche 959 Expected To Sell For Silly Money

The Porsche 959 is one of the most iconic supercars of the 1980s. With a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 197 mph, it was the fastest production car in the world when it first rolled off the production line in 1986. Only 337 were ever produced, which makes it extremely desirable to collectors. This 1987 example crossing the auction block at the Mecum Monterey auction this week is even rarer, because it's one of only 294 models that were built in the Komfort specification with adjustable suspension. It also only has 3,657 miles on the odometer and the interior is in good condition considering the car's age. Most Porsche 959s matching this description are worth over $1 million in today's classic car market. Except this one isn't in pristine condition, which explains why the auction house estimates it will sell for between $450,000 and $550,000. As you can see in the photos, the front-end is significantly damaged as the result of a previous accident. Strangely, Mecum doesn't even acknowledge the battered bodywork and missing right wheel in the auction listing. Mecum According to Motor Authority, the car was previously listed by a broker around a year ago. At the time, it had 3,500 miles on the odometer and was being sold for a whopping $1,300,000. Fortunately, the 444-hp twin-turbo 2.8-liter engine is positioned at the back, so it survived the crash. As shown in the accompanying video, the car still moves under its own power, so it's not a total loss. Let's hope the car's new owner can restore this mangled Porsche 959 back to its former glory.
