Chevrolet eCOPO Camaro' s Silent Burnout Sounds Like A Vacuum Cleaner

Nov. 04, 2018 4:35 PM ET by Jay Traugott Video / 8 Comments Is this the sound of future drag racers? Given that mainstream automakers are in the process of developing and releasing new vehicles with all-electric or hybrid powertrains, wouldn't it make sense for is technologies to spread to sports cars, muscle cars, and even drag racers? Of course, and Chevrolet is already laying the groundwork. At this year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the automaker showed off its eCOPO Camaro drag racing concept, very appropriately painted in Electric Blue. And yes, it's plenty fast. Try a quarter-mile time in around 9-seconds. It also has some very impressive general specs, such as more than 700 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque thanks to a pair of electric motors powered by a 32 kWh battery pack, and an automatic gearbox that directs all of that torque to the same solid rear axle used in the production COPO Camaro racers. Chevrolet Chevrolet That electric motor is based on a pair of BorgWarner HVH 250-150 motor assemblies, each of which generator 300 lb-ft of torque. It's an impressive setup no doubt, and there's a very good chance it'll reach production one day in a future COPO Camaro. But one of the best things about drag racers are the engine sounds they make. Burning rubber happens no matter what if lots of power is being directed to the rear wheels. So what does an internal combustion engine-less COPO Camaro sound like, aside from the familiar tire melting? Check out the video included above. Chevrolet Chevrolet/Isaac Brekken The electrified powertrain doesn't sound terrible, only different. Honestly, this thing sounds like an insanely overpowered industrial vacuum cleaner. Chevy says testing is ongoing so there's still time to adjust the sound, somehow, before the eventual production car arrives (and it will). Truthfully, there's more work to be done because we already miss the sound of the V8. Chances are a majority will feel the same way. GM Chevrolet GM
