Mercedes S560e Plug-In Hybrid Could Be The Ultimate S-Class

Oct. 12, 2018 8:15 AM ET by Jared Rosenholtz Reveal / 8 Comments What could be better than driving in electric silence? No matter which engine you chose, the Mercedes S-Class is a stupendous car. Perhaps this is why people use the term 'S-Class of (blank)' to describe extremely well-made items. Well, Mercedes has just revealed the new S560e Plug-In and it is the new S-Class of hybrids. This is the third generation of the plug-in S-Class and it may have just become our favorite variant. Although we absolutely loved our time in the S63 AMG Cabriolet, this S650e may be the S-Class to have, and here's why. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz The S560e is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 producing 367 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque mated to a nine-speed automatic. It also has a 90 kW battery producing 121 hp for a combined total of 476 hp and 516 lb-ft. Not only is that far more than the old plug-in S-Class, but it is also more than the standard S560 with its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. With so much power on tap, the S560e is reasonably quick with a five-second 0-60 mph time. Of course, the added benefit of the plug-in hybrid drivetrain is the ability to run the car on electric power alone. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes says the car can run up to 80 mph on electric power and has a driving range of 31 miles before the gas engine kicks in. The S-Class is already a quiet car but running with no engine should make it even more peaceful to drive. Charging the car is fairly quick and can be done (from flat to 100%) in one and a half hours on a fast charger or five hours on a regular household outlet. Orders have just opened in Germany starting at €96,065 (around $110,000). There is no word yet on when the car will be available in the US but we would be surprised if Mercedes didn't offer it here.
