Six-Wheel Mercedes X-Class Set To Battle AMG-G63 6x6

Oct. 10, 2018 7:33 AM ET by Noah Joseph Tuning / 4 Comments Six wheels, no waiting. Crushing hard on the Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6, and wishing you could still get one? Well you can't, and there's no telling if Daimler will ever make one again. But this may be the next best thing.
Carlex Design has revealed plans to make a six-wheeled Benz off-roader of its own. But instead of basing it on the new G-Wagen, it's building the truck on the basis of the X-Class pickup. Carlex calls it the Exy, and we dare say that it looks every bit as awesome as the dearly departed stretched Gelandewagen. The biggest change the tuner has in store for the pickup, of course, is the addition of the extra axle – portal or otherwise. But that's just the start. Carlex also envisions fitting six knobby off-road tires, housed within custom, riveted wheel wells. And they've required the fitment of a new transfer case and an extra differential and driveshaft. It's also redesigned the front bumper (complete with winch kit), designed a new tailgate, fitted a big scoop on the hood, installed a new sports bar to frame the extended bed, and mounted enough auxiliary lighting to embarrass a rally car. No word on what it would take to power the big beast. Based as it is on the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan, Mercedes currently offers the X-Class with a 2.0-liter turbo four gasoline engine and a trio of diesels ranging up to a 3.0-liter V6 good for 255 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. We wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Carlex tune the latter option for even more muscle. But the bigger question is whether the concept will ever see the light of day and be put into production. Here's hoping. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz
