Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (parent company of the Jeep brand) has announced that it's working on a plug-in hybrid version of the little sport-ute. And what's more is that it's already preparing the factory to begin output, with the first pre-production units set to begin rolling off the line sometime in the new year at FCA's plant in Melfi, Italy, ahead of a market launch in 2020. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Details are still few and far between at this point, but the Renegade PHEV is slated to become the latest model to receive the attention of FCA's electrification plan, following the Pacifica Hybrid and the mild-hybrid e-Torque version of the Ram 1500. The Italian-American automaker plans to launch as many as 12 electrified powertrains (including full hybrids, mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electric vehicles) to power 30 different models by 2022. The introduction of the Renegade PHEV alone is slated to cost FCA over €200 million ($230 million at current exchange rates). "With over 742,000 Renegades produced to date in Italy, the Melfi plant and the Renegade are the ideal location and the perfect product to launch the PHEV, further strengthening the offer of this highly successful Jeep", said FCA's Pietro Gorlier. In North America, Jeep offers the Renegade with a 1.4-liter turbo four rated at 160 horsepower or a 2.4-liter four good for 180 hp. Other markets benefit from diesel (and other gasoline) options as well. No word yet on whether the twin Fiat 500X will also gain the plug-in hybrid powertrain, but we wouldn't count it outside the realm of possibility. FCA FCA Jeep
