2020 Range Rover Evoque To Get Plug-In Hybrid Option

Nov. 26, 2018 3:10 PM ET by Martin Bigg / Comments The new Range Rover Evoque will be available with a mild-hybrid powertrain at launch. Last week, Land Rover lifted the wraps off the all-new 2020 Range Rover Evoque. Essentially a baby version of the Velar, we have no doubt it will continue the success of its predecessor as Land Rover's best-selling model. For the first time in the model's history, the Evoque is being offered with a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain paired with a 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers a combined 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Land Rover has also confirmed to Autoblog that a plug-in hybrid version will follow. Land Rover Land Rover This will be made possible thanks to the Evoque's Premium Transverse Architecture, which is 99 percent new. The extended 105.6-inch wheelbase is identical to the Jaguar E-Pace's and the new Evoque also gains a version of its Integral Link rear suspension. However, Land Rover engineers insist this is an all-new foundation and not a further evolution of the ageing D8 platform. Land Rover's Premium Transverse Architecture also features greater use of high-strength steel as well as targeted use of aluminum to save weight where possible. For example, the front suspension towers feature bonded and riveted integration into the steel structure inspired by similar production techniques on 'senior' Range Rover products. But the platform's main advantage is the ability to house various hybrid configurations without affecting the improved interior space of the new Evoque. At launch, the MHEV option will use an underfloor battery pack connected to a belt-driven motor-generator on the side of the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.
Land Rover Land Rover Land Rover This allows for far smoother integration of start-stop technology, electric torque boost and torque fill to aid the engine and conserve fuel. The engine now cuts out at speeds below 11 mph, which helps improves the fuel consumption by six percent. According to Autoblog, the future PHEV version of the new Evoque will combine a 197-horsepower, three-cylinder, 1.5-liter version of the Ingenium gasoline engine driving the front wheels with a 107-horsepower electric motor powering the rear axle. As a result, it will be able to run as a FWD gasoline-powered car, RWD electric-only vehicle or as a 'smart' AWD with both power sources combined. No word yet on the electric range, charging times, weight, and performance the Evoque PHEV will deliver, but Land Rover will release more information at the Chicago Auto Show in February.
