Porsche Plots Electric Sports Cars Onslaught

Oct. 17, 2018 7:00 PM ET by John Tallodi / Comments From all-electric Caymans and SUVs to Taycan Targas. At an event held at the Porsche development center last week, Finance Chief Lutz Meschke gave journalists a few glimpses into what we can expect from the manufacturer in the coming years. Without going into the specifics, Meschke said that an all-electric SUV should be on sale by 2022 at the latest, while electrified versions of the entry-level Boxster and Cayman was also a distinct possibility. With ex-CEO Matthias Müller's commitment to having an electrified version of every model in the VW Group brand by 2023, these revelations were not entirely unexpected. To meet the 2022 deadline, the underpinnings of the upcoming electric SUV could be based on the brand-new Cayenne or even a modified version of the upcoming Macan replacement. Seeing as Porsche shares its SUV platform with Audi, it could also build its electric model with components from the e-tron SUV. For now, it's all speculation but we wouldn't be surprised if this electric SUV turns out to be an all-new model to be sold in parallel with the existing SUV range.
Porsche Porsche Porsche The electric Taycan is due for a late 2019 release and it will form the base of a range of Taycan-styled derivatives which will include a Targa version launching around 2020. With regards to the company's core model, the 911, Meschke confirmed that the next generation 992 will include a hybrid version that will most likely be introduced during the mid-life facelift which should be around 2022. A fully electric variant has not been ruled out, but Porsche may decide to wait until it can integrate next-generation solid-state battery technology into the 911 to preserve its sporting appeal.
