Manual Fans Rejoice The Ford Bronco Could Be Coming With A Stickshift

Ever since Ford announced the return of the Ranger pickup truck and Bronco SUV, people have been digging to find out more details. The Ranger has already been revealed but we still have so many questions about the upcoming Bronco. Rumors indicate it will likely be available in two-door and four-door body styles, offer plenty of off-road performance and possibly have its own Raptor variant. Clearly, the Bronco is shaping up to be a solid competitor for the Jeep Wrangler but there is still one big question on the minds of enthusiasts: will it come with a manual transmission? Ford Speaking to Jalopnik, sources from Getrag said the company is working with Ford to develop a new manual transmission for the upcoming Bronco. This new transmission will be called the MT-88 and will likely be mated to a 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. We've recently tested this engine in the new Edge ST, where it produces 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. Ford already works with Getrag to produce the Mustang's MT-82 six-speed manual, so this new seven-speed gearbox may be used in the next generation Mustang as well. According to the Getrag website, the company has been working on a new transmission called the 6/7MTI550. The specs say it can be either a six-speed or seven-speed manual with the ability to handle up to 405 lb-ft of torque and all-wheel-drive. Jalopnik reached out to Getrag's owners, Magna, who said: "Unfortunately, because the new Ford Bronco is a future vehicle program, we are not able to confirm or discuss any potential content we might have." Although the take rate may be extremely low, selling the Bronco with a manual option seems like a smart idea. The Jeep Wrangler has always offered a manual, so a competitor would need to offer one as well.
