The only thing that could be better, for the legions of Jeep fans around the world, than the new Wrangler is the promise of the forthcoming pickup version. But even better than that, in our book, would be a six-wheeled version of that truck. Like the one in this rendering. Sent to us by our friends at Allcarnews, the speculative rendering shows what the highly anticipated new Jeep Gladiator would look like with an extra driven axle at the back of its pickup bed. And it looks pretty damn sweet to us, even if it stands little chance of ever being produced. The six-wheel craze was started in earnest when Mercedes released the limited-edition G63 6x6. It was a beast of a machine, based on the military-spec pickup version of the previous Geländewagen. but muscled- and luxed-up for the consumer market. It packed a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 sending 536 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque through a seven-speed automatic transmission and a whole mess of locking differentials and transfer cases to all six wheels, mounted with portal axles and fitted with 37-inch tires to give it more ground clearance than a rocket ship. Jeep Gladiator Forums Jeep Gladiator Forum Handout After producing a little over a hundred of them, Mercedes phased out the G63 6x6 in 2015, following up with the G500 4x4² – retaining the ride height but only two of those portal axles – before replacing the G-Class altogether. And ever since, customizers like Hennessey and Kahn have been scrambling to fill the void of the 6x6's departure with six-wheelers of their own.
