Sales will be underway very soon and production is already happening. It's a good time for mid-size truck lovers. And one of the many reasons why some truck customers are turned off by full-size pickups, such as the F-150, is fuel economy. Despite its aluminum body, the F-150 is still bigger and heavier than the Ranger and, therefore, less fuel efficient. Speaking of which, the Ranger5G forum has uncovered the window sticker for a new Ranger which reveals the official fuel economy figures before being released. Now, it's important to note these figures are for the 4x2 version though it's not very difficult to predict the 4x4's numbers based on these. Ford Ford We'll get back to that in a moment but first, here are those figures: 21/26/23 mpg city/highway/combined. To compare, the 2018 Ford F-150 4x2 achieves 20/26/22 mpg with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost. The base 3.3-liter V6 gets roughly the same with 19/25/22 mpg. The Ranger is powered by the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo four, the very same engine used in the Mustang EcoBoost and Focus RS. So yeah, the 2019 Ranger 4x2 fuel economy figures are just fine, though not world's better than a lower trim F-150. As for the Ranger 4x4, a forum member noted the following: "It's a 4wd not an AWD so the front Differential spins free unless the 4x4 is engaged and the transfer case sends power to it. For regular driving, the only difference to MPG is a little extra weight from the 4x4 equipment and the small loss from friction from the front differential spinning free in 2wd." Ford Ford Ford So given that, don't expect the 4WD version's fuel economy figures to greatly differ. But how does the 4x2 Ranger compare to a direct rival, the Chevrolet Colorado 4x2, specifically with the 2.8-liter diesel? Here are its figures: 20/30/23 mpg. This means the Ranger 4x2 meets or exceeds the Colorado diesel's city and combined mpg figures. Not bad.
