Volkswagen Amarok Successor Could Come To America

Nov. 12, 2018 9:05 AM ET by Martin Bigg / 6 Comments VW is also considering launching a unibody pickup in the US. Next January, the Ford Ranger will be making a triumphant comeback in the US as part of a major mid-size pickup resurgence. It's the perfect time, then, for Volkswagen to launch the Amarok Stateside but it's currently still only available overseas, despite VW registering the "Amarok" name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office nearly a year ago. This could soon change, however. Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen Speaking with Automotive News, CEO Herbert Diess said that no decision has been made regarding VW's future pickup truck plans in America, but an Amarok successor could eventually be sold in the US. This will only happen, however, if VW and Ford reach an agreement to jointly develop a pickup truck that "would be then appropriate for sales worldwide," including the US. The CEO also added that VW is considering launching a unibody pickup in the US but admitted this is "still probably a bit risky." Volkswagen also recently revealed the Tarok Concept, a small truck that will go on sale in Brazil. Potentially, it could also preview a future Volkswagen pickup truck for the US market. Volkswagen Volkswagen The CEO also acknowledged that pickup trucks represent "a very American segment" and that existing models could be adapted for the American market. "We have the toolbox to satisfy America," Diess said. "If we need a special, specific version of the Tiguan, for example, we can do it for America. It's very easy." Hopefully, then, the US won't be deprived of the Volkswagen Amarok for much longer. Volkswagen
