Kia Scraps Plans For Sorento Diesel In America

The Kia Sorento is currently sold in the US with a choice of two gasoline engines. Last year, Kia said a diesel engine would eventually be offered in the US with the "latest emission controls," but it appears these plans have now been scrapped. Speaking to Car and Driver, an unnamed Kia representative blamed "logistical challenges such as establishing a service and maintenance network among its US dealers for what would have been a low-volume product." Kia In other words, Kia has low sales projections for a diesel Sorento in the US, which makes it difficult to justify the investment. The Sorento diesel in Europe comes powered by a 2.2-liter turbodiesel inline-4, which produces 197 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. Kia's decision to scrap the Sorento Diesel in America also makes us wonder about the fate of the Hyundai Santa Fe Diesel that's slated to come to the US in 2019. Kia Thanks to the dieselgate scandal, options for diesel SUVs are becoming increasingly limited in the US. The Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain both have EPA ratings of up to 28 mpg city, 39 highway, 32 combined and the front-wheel-drive Mazda CX-5 diesel earns 28/31/29 mpg while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 27/30/28 mpg. Premium SUVs such as the Jaguar F-Pace, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Land Rover Range Rover are also still offered with diesel variants. The Kia Sorento, on the other hand, will only be available with two gasoline options: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque or a 3.3-liter V6 with 290 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque.
