Next BMW X6 Could Have Some Big Performance Surprises

May. 06, 2019 4:30 PM ET by Jay Traugott Spy Shots / 2 Comments Hint: look at its benchmark. It's no mystery BMW will soon unveil its next-generation X6 Sport Activity Vehicle, or SAV in BMW-speak. Like the previous two X6 generations, the latest one will share its general underpinnings with the latest X5. The coupe-like body style, the X6's most recognizable trait, will obviously return and based on these latest spy shots direct from the Nurburgring, that styling looks a bit smoother than the chunky outgoing model. The camouflage is not particularly heavy so we can make out a fair amount of its overall design. But that's not what caught our attention when our spy photographers sent us these photos. The vehicle in question is undoubtedly an X6, but this particular prototype, spotted inside and out, was also seen testing alongside the current X6 M, which is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 567 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The new model will also likely be powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, the very same one found in the latest X5. Expect output here to be around 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. Do the math and that's not a dramatic output difference between the new X6 and the outgoing X6 M. In other words, the next X6 M is going to be an absolute beast. We highly suspect it'll utilize this same V8 but output will be increased to at least 600 hp. Taking a closer look at the new X6's interior you'll find a wide infotainment display screen on top of the center stack. The overall positioning of the screen makes it easier for the driver to view its content without having to take their eyes off the road. Also, note the iDrive controller is now located next to the gearshift on the center console. The thinly disguised prototype also reveals a front end heavily influenced by the new X7, specifically the large grille. Like with the previous X6 generations, some will love it, others will loathe it. We expect to see the new BMW X6 debut sometime before the end of this summer before its live public debut this September at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The next X6 M is still at least a year away.
