This Is Not Your Typical Drift Machine

May. 04, 2019 9:40 AM ET by Noah Joseph Video / 1 Comment But then the Tahoe RST is not your typical Chevy Tahoe, either. Professional drifters typically ply their skills in lightweight, rear-drive coupes with manual transmissions. Big SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe, somewhat less so. But that's just what Ahmad Daham has done in this latest video.
The 32-year-old Jordanian is a Red Bull prodigy who's not only won numerous regional championships, but holds a Guinness-certified world record for the longest twin drift, set with Irish driver James Deane in a pair of Nissan 370Zs in 2014. "Sideways is the new way forward," Daham likes to say. And that's the direction in which he's taken this Tahoe. Not just any Tahoe, mind you. This is a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe RST – shorthand for Rally Sport Truck. It packs a 6.2-liter V8 rated at 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission (with shorter gears for quicker acceleration), breathing through a Borla exhaust. And it rides on Corvette-derived magnetorheological dampers with giant 22-inch wheels and Brembo brakes that, at over 16 inches in diameter, are as big as the wheels on some cars. With the throttle pegged, it'll run to 60 in under six seconds, and it can still haul 8,400 pounds. It still may not be the ideal drift machine, but that's what makes this endeavor so unique. It was filmed on the Yas Marina circuit in the United Arab Emirates – home to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the Gulf 12 Hours. "In the drifting community, we don't typically use SUVs for stunts and competitions. But the Tahoe RST is a beast," said Daham. "Its powerful engine, excellent handling, and performance technology make it an insanely fun and capable car to drift, which is why it stands out from other SUVs for me as a professional drifter."
