New Aston Martin Vantage AMR Will Make Purists Very Happy

Apr. 27, 2019 4:50 PM ET by Martin Bigg Teaser / 1 Comment Aston Martin is finally answering our prayers to add a missing feature to the new Vantage. It's been nearly 18 months since the new Aston Martin Vantage debuted, and yet it still isn't available with a manual gearbox. The only transmission available is an eight-speed automatic. Last April, Aston Martin told us the V8-powered sports car will eventually be offered with an old-school manual transmission. One year later, the wait is nearly over. Aston Martin has confirmed a new AMR version of the new Vantage is coming soon, with a teaser image showing three pedals. This obviously suggests it will finally be offered with a manual transmission to keep purists happy. Aston Martin aston martin Specific details are being kept under wraps for now, but the teaser suggests an official reveal is imminent. The previous V12 Vantage S utilized a seven-speed manual transmission, so there's a good chance the new Vantage will offer the same setup. This will also be the first time the AMG-sourced V8 engine has been mated to a manual gearbox, which would have presented many challenges for Aston Martin's engineers. It will likely have required a significant redesign for the interior since the automatic Vantage has a column-mounted gear selector borrowed from Mercedes. Aston Martin Going by Aston Martin's other AMR offerings like the DB11 AMR and Rapide AMR, the new driver-focused version of the new Vantage should also get more aggressive styling, some chassis tweaks, and a bespoke interior. The new Vantage AMR will also retain the standard model's Mercedes-AMG sourced 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, but the power output could get a small increase. In the current Vantage, AMG's V8 pumps out 503 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of torque. 0-62 mph takes 3.5 seconds before the Vantage tops out at 195 mph. While we're pleased to see the new Vantage finally get a manual transmission, don't get your hopes up for a V12 version. Handout, Aston Martin
