The Feds Might Have A Problem With Our Dream Mazda6

Mazda brought the long-awaited diesel engine to the CX-5 crossover at the 2019 New York Auto Show, with the 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged inline-four finally having passed US emissions regulations. Making 168 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque, the diesel engine will only be found on the Signature trim, and will come standard with all-wheel-drive. With Mazda going to the trouble of getting the diesel engine past US regulations, it would be strange to put it in just one product. That's why Jeff Guyton, the new president of Mazda North American Operations, used the New York Auto Show to declare that the diesel engine will also make it under the hood of the Mazda6 midsize sedan, along with all-wheel-drive. This move is a long time coming. Mazda initially announced that the Mazda6 would feature a diesel back when the current generation made its North American debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show. However, difficulty passing regulations and the Dieselgate scandal surrounding Volkswagen's diesel emissions cheating slowed down the engine's arrival. Since then, the Mazda6 has undergone two refreshes, but will finally be getting the Skyactiv-D diesel engine - if its able to pass federal tests, of course. At the New York press conference, Guyton announced that "as Mazda continues our climb toward premium we will offer more powertrain choices that customers expect, and diesel is such an option, and for that reason, we are working to bring diesel with all-wheel drive also to our beautiful Mazda6." It is unclear whether the all-wheel-drive system will be available on the gas engines, which can be either naturally aspirated or turbocharged. However, the diesel-powered all-wheel-drive Mazda6 will likely arrive in 2020. Here's to hoping it clears the emissions hurdles without fuss this time.
