Nurburgring Record Holder Wants To Smack The Tesla Model 3

You should, because the 1,342-hp Chinese electric supercar currently holds the EV lap record at the Nurburgring. The Chinese company also produces the ES8 SUV, which has an impressive range of up to 311 miles and produces 643 horsepower and 619 lb-ft of torque. Now, Nio is gearing up to enter the increasingly crowded electric sedan segment. At the Shanghai Auto Show, Nio is showing off what it calls the ET Preview showing what its first-ever electric sedan could look like when it enters production. Nio says the ET Preview "represents NIO's exploration of an all new car body, whose sleek new contours combine elegant proportions with power and beauty through a minimalistic design." With its fastback-style design, sleek LED headlights, and pop-out door handles, the ET Preview is clearly Nio's answer to the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2. The Nio ET Preview packs a high-performance powertrain that combines a high-energy density NCM811 nickel-cobalt-manganese battery pack with "high-efficiency permanent magnet motors in the front and high-performance induction motors in the rear." The drivetrain has an output of 295 hp. No performance specifications have been released, but Nio has confirmed the ET has an NEDC-rated electric range of 317 miles on a single battery charge. For comparison, the long-range Tesla Model 3 has 310 miles of range, while the Polestar 2 will have a range of around 275 miles according to EPA estimates. A production model based on the ET Preview is expected to debut in China before 2021. It could arrive in the US one day, too. Eventually, Nio aims to sell cars in the US and has already raised roughly $1 billion in its initial public offering to help make it happen.
