BMW Stretched The 8 Series So The Gran Coupe Can Look Sexy

A single photo with plenty of darkness cloaking the lower two thirds of a sleek body. That's all a teaser photo usually is, including this glimpse of the 8 Series Gran Coupe that BMW just released. But you know what? It doesn't matter that we can't see the rest of the body. Credit modern safety regulations for making most cars look the same below the upper character line anyway. What's always mattered most with the 8 Series is how the roofline looks. That holds especially true for the 8 Series Gran Coupe, what looks to be BMW's master thesis in four-door coupe design. The first thing to note about the 8 Series Gran Coupe, aside from the fact that it's a fantastic shape to stare at, is that it looks as long as a shipping barge. BMW didn't skimp to get those coupe proportions, it actually went ahead and gave the car a long hood, a peak just above the driver and front passenger's heads, and a gradual descent that ends at a fastback rear end. Proportions like that mean the 8 Series Gran Coupe's length is a figure we'll be paying close attention to when it comes time for its release. Especially now that we know an M8 Gran Coupe will follow it and take on the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and Porsche Panamera Turbo S, and because dimensions matter in the battle for best lap time. Thankfully BMW isn't making us wait very long to learn more about the Gran Coupe. Along with the image was a promise that the four-door coupe is in its final stages of development for series production, and that a reveal event would take place between June 25th-27th. The worldwide launch will take place just a few months later, in September of this year. While BMW may be late to the executive four-door coupe playing field when compared to its rivals, it's almost certain the 8 Series Gran Coupe will be a smash hit when it arrives. Especially if it drives anything like the 8 Series Coupe.
