Here' s BMW' s Most Affordable Interior Before You' re Supposed To See It

May. 05, 2019 3:45 PM ET by Jared Rosenholtz Spy Shots / 9 Comments A bargain or just cheap? BMW has been spotted testing an all-new 1 Series hatchback, which will supposedly include a sporty M135i xDrive variant. Power is rumored to come from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that sends 302 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque out to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. We still don't know whether or not a manual, which was offered on the previous generation M135i, will be available on this new car. It is also doubtful that the 1 Series hatchback will arrive in the United States. Instead, we will get a different version of the car called the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Although we have also seen spy shots of the rumored 2 Series, we have yet to see what the car looks like on the inside. Until now. Our spy photographers have captured close-up pictures of the new 1 Series' interior, which will likely be the same interior found on the next-generation 2 Series, X1, and X2. By switching from a rear-wheel drive layout to an all-wheel drive system with a transversally mounted engine, the 1 Series will have more interior space. Based on what we can see in the photos, even BMW's entry-level model will use premium materials and a design closely resembling the larger 3 Series, albeit with a few obvious simplifications. The gauge cluster, for example, looks to retain analog dials rather than a digital display like the one found in larger BMW models. Looking down at the infotainment controller on the center console, it appears this test car is equipped with a more simplified iDrive controller than the one found on pricier BMWs. Finally, the steering wheel lacks many buttons for active safety features like lane keep assist or adaptive cruise control. We weren't expecting BMW's least expensive car to have all of these features, but perhaps this prototype is a lower trim model.
