Ford We DARE You To Build This

Apr. 21, 2019 7:55 AM ET by Jay Traugott / 7 Comments Come on! Show a little backbone, will ya? If there's one thing we can say about the all-new 2020 Ford Escape, it's this: it looks very un-SUV like. More like a raised wagon, if anything. And that's just fine because, according to Ford, that's what customer feedback dictated. The Escape is one of the Blue Oval's best-sellers so it makes complete sense to listen to loyal owners about what they want and don't want. But whatever you think of the new Escape, it doesn't exactly scream "off-road." Quite the opposite. Because the Focus is dead in America, Ford needs to cover those buyers as well, and since the Escape is once again built on the same platform as the Focus, which continues to be sold overseas, a more car-like design was chosen. This doesn't mean a bit of spice can't be added. Car rendering artist X-Tomi Design has dreamed up what's essentially an Escape Raptor. The Escape, sold as the Kuga in Europe, is shown here with the F-150 Raptor's beefy wheels and tires, and a similar front end, side sills, and body side graphics. And to be honest, it doesn't look half bad. Tack on the new Escape's optional AWD system and various other modifications courtesy of Ford Performance and you're in business. Now, the likelihood of an Escape Raptor coming to fruition is slight. The new Escape won't be the only crossover SUV based on the Focus you'll soon be able to buy. Ford Ford That second vehicle will be the so-called "Baby Bronco", a vehicle we could easily see receiving serious off-road modifications one day. While the Escape will appeal to the soccer moms out there, the Baby Bronco will be for those who enjoy going off the beaten path every now and then but don't need a full-on SUV like the reborn Bronco itself. But still, this Escape Raptor does look pretty rad. However, a more road performance-tuned Escape ST is a more likely possibility. Ford Ford Ford
