Tesla Reminds Competitors It' s Still Way Better Than Them

Mainstream automakers have finally acknowledged Tesla as a serious threat after not taking the California-based EV startup seriously. Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz are all preparing or have already launched direct competitors to the Model S and/or Model X. The EV barrage is not going to stop but Tesla has no intention of settling for second place. Earlier this week it announced that both the Model S and Model X have improved driving ranges. The Model S and Model X Long Range variants achieve 370 miles and 325 miles respectively on the EPA cycle. Prior to the update, the vehicles were rated at 335 miles and 295 miles, respectively. The key to making this possible is a new powertrain that replaces the front induction motor. It adds the Model 3's more efficient magnet motor, but there's still an induction motor at the rear. Tesla Tesla In addition to range improvement, power and torque are also up for all Model S and Model X variants. Another key upgrade is faster charging. Each vehicle is now capable of achieving 200 kilowatts on V3 Superchargers and 145 kW on V2 Superchargers, resulting in a 50% faster charging time. Tesla is also including a new adaptive air suspension that's both more comfortable during highway cruising and firmer during more aggressive driving. This system is standard across the Model S and Model X range and is fully automatic., constantly sensing the road and adjusting itself according to driving style. Tesla Lastly, existing owners of both Teslas who want to upgrade to the top-of-the-line Model S or Model X Performance will get Ludicrous Mode for free. Normally, it costs an extra $20,000. And yes, Ludicrous Mode is something that's highly desirable with a crazy fast 0-60 mph time of 2.4 seconds, down from 3.0 seconds, in the Model S. The updated Model S and Model X are already on sale on Tesla's official website and production for both will kick off immediately.
