Range Rover Is Making A Big Mistake With The Evoque

The technology is no longer limited to relatively small-time niche players. Tesla helped make that happen. But it also set the stage for a new era of powertrain technology and its competitors are now catching up. However, Land Rover isn't a marque that Tesla needs to fear. According to Autocar, Land Rover has no immediate plans to fully electrify the just revealed all-new 2020 Range Rover Evoque. Instead, a plug-in hybrid variant will arrive first. A pure electric Evoque won't happen before 2025. Tesla's upcoming Model Y will have one less competitor. Instead, the Evoque PHEV will arrive in about a year, powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with 197 hp connected to a 107-hp electric motor. Land Rover Jaguar Land Rover's UK boss, Rawdon Glover, promises this vehicle will be a "fleet game-changer" and, in the UK alone, could make up for one-third of all Evoque sales. Like many automakers, JLR sees plug-in hybrid tech as a middle ground between gasoline and hybrid and all-out electrification. The latter obviously requires more time and money. And speaking of money, JLR is currently having major financial problems that still need to be worked out. In case you're wondering, it's not possible to simply take the Jaguar I-Pace's guts and stuff them into the Evoque. The vehicles are built on entirely different platforms. Land Rover is also planning an all-electric variant of its Range Rover flagship, though it too isn't expected for another few years. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y is due to begin deliveries in 2021, but that's assuming all goes as planned and, being Tesla, that's rarely the case. Still, we find it unfortunate Land Rover isn't planning an all-electric Range Rover Evoque for quite some time. Money problems aside, this is one segment it should be leading. Tesla Tesla
