There' s Bad News About The 1 000-HP Hellephant V8

May. 05, 2019 4:35 PM ET by Jay Traugott / 1 Comment Don't kill the messenger. It took only a few days for it to happen and we can't say we're in the least bit surprised. According to Allpar, Mopar's new 1,000 hp, 426-cubic inch Hellephant Hemi V8 crate engine is officially sold out. Sales only began last week but Allpar soon noticed that third party (mostly reliable) sources were claiming the Hellephant demand far outweighed supply. Allpar reached out to FCA who confirmed the reality. "Given the high demand and the hand-built, time-intensive build process, we have closed preordering for the 426 Hellephant Supercharged HEMI crate engine. Based on preorders, the engine sold out in just two days," the company stated. "Customers can visit www.cratehemi.com to receive future information and updates on the 'Hellephant' engine." FCA Priced at $29,995 a pop and for an additional $2,265 Mopar will toss in an engine kit that includes a number of other desirable goodies, the Hellephant naturally drew a lot of customer interest, but interest doesn't always translate into sales, hence Mopar's decision to keep this initial production round very low. How low? Allpar believes Mopar is making only 100 examples (initially rumored at 1,000) for now but will evaluate overall demand in order to decide whether to build more units and, if so, how many. FCA has not confirmed the 100-unit figure, however. But if you're extremely desperate to have a Hellephant for your project car and missed out on this initial production run and can't wait for Mopar to build more, there might be another way to get one faster. FCA FCA Chances are at least one person who managed to snap one up will be looking to flip it. The obvious downside is you'll be paying far more than the $30k MSRP. But patience is a virtue and, in this case, a likely money-saver. Rumor has it a second batch of Hellephants are planned for 2020. Fingers crossed. FCA FCA FCA
