New Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 Will Be One Mean-Looking SUV

May. 01, 2019 9:51 AM ET by Martin Bigg / 3 Comments This could give Mercedes the edge over the BMW X7. The all-new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS made its world debut at the 2019 New York Auto Show earlier this month as a rival to the BMW X7, but it's only a matter before it gets the AMG performance treatment. In its current GLS 580 4Matic guise, the three-row SUV packs a 4.0-liter V8 with an EQ Boost 48-volt system and integrated starter-generator. The powertrain produces 482 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, but the starter-generator provides an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque over short periods. That's more than enough power for most people, but the range-topping AMG GLS 63 will likely increase the output to over 600 hp to match the AMG E63, which is insane for a full-size SUV. We've already seen camouflaged prototypes of the new AMG GLS 63, but Instagram page J.B. Cars has created some render images to show us what the high-performance SUV will look like when the covers come off. As you would expect, the AMG variant looks more aggressive than its standard sibling. At the front, the GLS 63 features AMG's signature Panamericana grille along with massive air intakes. The rendered SUV also rides on a set of black wheels featuring bright red brake calipers, while a revised bumper incorporating carbon fiber elements, a rear diffuser, and quad tailpipes have been added to the rear. BMW has already ruled out developing an X7 M due to the lack of customer demand for high-performance full-size SUVs, so the AMG GLS 63 should give Mercedes a huge advantage over its rival. Since the new GLS has already been revealed, the AMG variant should break cover by the end of the year, possibly at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
