Official Porsche 718 Twins Will Never Be The Same

According to a new Autocar report, Porsche has not only made the decision to electrify the next-generation 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman but also that prototypes are currently up and running. "We have prototypes of the 718 running in electric now, and a hybrid prototype is being built," said Porsche chairman Oliver Blume. "If you look to the next generation of those cars it is possible, although it is not yet clear whether it would be plug-in hybrid or hybrid." We previously heard rumors claiming Porsche is intent on doing something drastic, like full electrification, for the next 718 twins, due in 2022. Autocar's latest report seems to clarify this. It also claims the 718 twins will ride on Porsche's new PPE architecture, not a dedicated platform. Porsche What's more, they will be sold alongside the hybrid and plug-in hybrid offerings. Our last report on this subject also claimed it would be impossible for Porsche to fully electrify the current gen models because the platform isn't capable. However, it seems a major platform update is in order that will result in accommodating hybrid and/or PHEV technology. If this 718 future plan sounds somewhat familiar then you'd be right. The next-gen Macan SUV will continue to be built on its existing though heavily updated platform that will accommodate hybrid drivetrains. At the same time, an all-electric Macan will go on sale though it'll derive its underpinnings from a variant of the same PPE architecture that'll support the electric 718. How long will Porsche sell two types of Macans on two different platforms? Porsche Porsche "For at least two to three years we will have both," Blume said. "At that point, we can decide whether to upgrade the combustion engines to the new Euro 7 standard or go full electric. The pace that countries are changing is different – China wants electric now, Russia is in less of a hurry, for instance." We wouldn't be surprised if Porsche follows this same or similar blueprint for the next 718s as well. The hybrid 718s will feature flat four engines connected to a 48V electrical system. The electric motor itself will be integrated into a modified version of the current cars' seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. While the hybrid 718s will provide an electric boost for performance sake, the PHEV variants are more geared towards running on electric power only if the driver so chooses. Porsche Porsche Porsche
