Cadillac Wants To Use The Blackwing V8 Again

A GM source recently told CarBuzz that Omega was never intended for the new Cadillac CT5 as previously reported, though if it weren't for cost-cutting measures, this architecture very likely would have served as the basis for the Cadillac XT6. But what about the CT6-V's engine, the one and only Blackwing V8? Again, past reports indicated its future status was still up in the air, but Motor Trend recently spoke to Cadillac's chief engineer to discuss the matter further. Brandon Vivian is, not surprisingly, a huge fan of the 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 and, personally, he very much wants to see it elsewhere. "Would I relish the opportunity to put [the Blackwing] in something else? Yes," Vivian said. Although he was unable to offer more details, he added that "[Cadillac] continue[s] to look for opportunities to use the engine," adding that its future depends on the "right combination of the product [the engine] is going into [and] the segment it's going to compete in." Cadillac Cadillac Cadillac What's for certain is that the Blackwing won't be utilized for high-performance versions of the CT4-V or CT5-V, though that's hardly new. The all-new Cadillac Escalade also won't get it, so what's left? "There's a desire for us to compete globally in every segment possible," Vivian added. Looking at Cadillac's current lineup and you'll soon notice there is no direct competitor to the BMW 5 Series. This mid-size luxury sedan segment is definitely not what it once was, but this doesn't mean it should be ignored entirely. The CT5 is smaller than the 5 Series and is really a 3 Series fighter. The CT4 battles the likes of the Audi A3 sedan. Does this mean Cadillac is considering going to battle against the 5 Series? What about the M5? Cadillac Cadillac Cadillac The Blackwing's 550 horsepower is certainly a formidable foe for the M5 Competition's 617 hp twin-turbo V8. The Omega platform is also flexible so, in theory, it could be adapted for a sedan smaller than the full-size CT6. But again, Omega was a one-time thing. Let's also not forget Cadillac's already announced plan to launch an all-electric flagship sedan called Celestiq in the not too distant future. Despite Vivian's Blackwing future hopes, we're still unsure where it could be used again. But it seems Cadillac is somehow determined to make it happen.
