The Most Powerful Mini Ever Is Surprisingly Fuel Efficient

Apr. 08, 2020 5:45 PM ET by Jay Traugott Industry News / 6 Comments The EPA's official fuel economy ratings are in. We reported in January that the new 2020 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works GP was almost sold out. A total of 3,000 examples are planned globally, with only a quarter of those heading to our shores. Don't be surprised if all have been spoken for by now. Those who did manage to snap up one of those $45,000 hot hatches will be pleased to know the official fuel efficiency figures are actually quite good. The EPA has declared the JCW GP will return 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The combined driving figure comes to 26 mph. Not bad at all for something with 301 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic is the sole gearbox because the brand's existing six-speed manual isn't capable of handling that much juice. Mini Mini Mini The Cooper JCW GP's closest mpg competitor is none other than the AWD Volkswagen Golf R. Both scored the same EPA highway and combined rating, though the Golf R's city rating is down by just 1 mpg. But what about fellow FWD competitors? Again, the Mini is the clear winner. The Honda Civic Type R returns 22/28/25 mpg city/highway/combined while the Hyundai Veloster N gets nearly the same figures of 22/29/25 mpg. But it's important to remember the Mini is the only three-door here. The rest are all five-door hatchbacks, meaning they have greater cargo space and, more importantly, usable rear seats. The JCW GP's rear seats are replaced by a cross brace for added rigidity. Practicality doesn't always matter to some enthusiasts. They're in it for the power, and the new JCW GP delivers. Mini Mini Mini Only the Civic Type R bests it in horsepower, by just 5 ponies, but the JCW GP smashes it in the torque department with an extra 37 lb-ft. Another factor worth noting is that the Honda and Hyundai are manual-only. But still, the 2020 Mini Cooper JCW GP, the most powerful Mini to date, comes complete with an upgraded suspension and brakes, aero body kit, and a 0-62 mph sprint time of 5.2 seconds. The fact that its EPA ratings are solid is the icing on the cake. Mini Mini Mini Mini Mini
