There' s Only Four Other Lotus Esprits Like This One On Earth

Apr. 12, 2020 6:05 PM ET by Jay Traugott Auctions / 8 Comments And this one is headed to auction on Monday. Those in the market for a Lotus Esprit will have a fair number of well-preserved examples to choose from. Of course, some Esprits are in better condition than others, but given that the iconic sports car was built from 1976 until 2004, there should also be a decent amount of spare parts out there. However, some Esprits are more special than others and, no, we're not talking about James Bond's Esprit-turned submarine. What we have here is a 1987 Lotus Esprit Turbo HC that will be auctioned off online auction this Monday, April 13 by UK auction house The Market. Why is this particular right-hand drive Esprit Turbo so unique? It's one of 21 examples built to celebrate 21 years of production at the Hethel factory. This example is build No. 10, but it's also just one of five to be finished in the gorgeous two-tone Essex Blue paint job. It's also nearly blemish-free and has its original upholstery trim. Total mileage comes to only 54,600. The Market The Market The Market The Market It originally left the factory on February 27, 1987, and spent the first few years of its life in the UK before heading to a private collection in Portugal for 14 years. During this time it was never driven. It returned to the UK in 2018 after being purchased by a Lotus enthusiast. They knew exactly what they were getting. That owner initially intended to keep it forever but for some reason changed their mind. Before doing so, it was treated to an over $12,000 recommissioning job. Some of its many unique features include a factory toolkit, a two-tone briefcase, and a three-piece wheeled luggage set. The original front and rear window stickers are also included. The Market The Market The Market The Market Marking its special status, this Esprit has a sterling silver plaque inside as well exterior decals. Power comes from a 2.2-liter turbocharged inline-four good for 215 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque, with that power sent to the rear wheels through a Citroen-sourced five-speed manual gearbox. Lotus fans will also know that 1987 was the final model year of the Series 3 Esprit. The restyled Series 4 from Peter Stevens debuted only a few months later. This was when the Esprit first diverted away from the original Giorgetto Giugiaro design. So, what's this extremely rare Lotus Esprit Turbo HC valued at? A very affordable 40,000 to 50,000 GBP, or roughly $49,500 to $62,000 according to current exchange rates. That's actually less money than a Lotus Evora 400, which only began at $95,000.
