2021 Toyota Supra Power Boost Comes At Expense Of MPG

The Toyota Supra has been upgraded after just a single model year, a move that surprised many, especially those who bought one recently. Sometimes it's worth waiting at least one model year before taking the plunge. In addition, Toyota will also offer a turbo-four Supra for 2021, a less powerful (255-hp) but lighter and less expensive option. Toyota says about 200 pounds have been removed and hinted to CarBuzz a $40,000 or so starting price. But the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six will also be more powerful than before. The upgraded engine will now produce a total of 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 47 hp and 2 lb-ft. Toyota also says the updated engine revs higher than last year. There's also a new exhaust manifold, lower compression ratio, and a new piston design. However, these improvements come at a price, fuel economy. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz The EPA has officially released updated fuel economy figures for the 2021 Supra six-cylinder and, well, they've dropped a bit. It's now rated at 22/30/25 mpg city/highway/combined compared to last year's 24/31/26 mpg rating. Clearly these aren't significant changes and we highly doubt anyone will mind. More power at the slight expense of a few MPG? It's so worth it. These upgrades have also improved the Supra's 0 to 60 sprint time by 0.2 seconds, now estimated at 3.9 seconds. But what about the Supra 2.0's fuel economy ratings? Unfortunately, the EPA has yet to release that data but we expect it to arrive relatively soon. Sales for both are expected to get underway this summer, assuming there are no coronavirus related delays. Toyota Toyota Toyota Aside from the engine and other related upgrades, the 2021 Supra will also feature a revised chassis featuring new lightweight aluminum braces from the strut towers to the radiator, front and rear bump stops, and a damper re-tune. Both the electric power steering and adaptive suspension settings have been tweaked as well. Inside, all 2021 Supras will come equipped with an 8.8-inch display instead of last year's 6.5-inch unit. A new Safety and Technology Package featuring adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, navigation, and a 12-speaker sound system is also available for both 2.0 and 3.0 models.
