Watch Tesla Model Y Owner Reveals Shocking Quality Issues

Tesla has done a lot to be proud of over the last couple of years, but if there is one aspect of its vehicles that needed improvement, it's build quality. From the Model S to the Model 3, Elon Musk's electric cars simply haven't been constructed to the same meticulous standard as German rivals like Porsche and Audi. So, with the much newer Model Y crossover, we were hopeful that quality had improved. Unfortunately, a viral video from an owner of a new Model Y says otherwise. Shared on Reddit and YouTube, the user Kenriko - who took delivery of a Model Y Performance, an SUV that costs $60,990 - highlights several quality defects, and they really do look bad. "The car was dropped off in my driveway with these issues," said the owner in the Reddit post, with the defects shockingly even including a scratched wheel. The owner's three other major complaints include a headliner that "looks like it came out of a used car," scratches on the interior panels, and a broken hatch. We watched the video a few times, and what's curious is that although there are definitely quality issues, this vehicle also appears to have been dirtied/damaged in the factory by careless workers. The numerous marks on the light-colored headliner and scratches on the door panels and dash speak to this. While completely unacceptable, these aren't actually quality issues with the vehicle, but point to a final quality check process that is clearly flawed. As for actual defects - and not those caused by human error - there's no disputing the broken hatch, the exposed and inconsistent finish of the roof pillar material where it meets up with the glass, and an unsightly rubber strip that doesn't sit flush on another pillar. The owner also mentioned passenger seat scratches and dings in the side rear quarter panels - these were not shown in the video. Another user shared a second Model Y video on Kenriko's post, whereby someone else had taken delivery of a new Model Y which also had an issue with the rear hatch, as well as taillights that aligned smoothly on one side, but not on the other. With the much-anticipated Ford Mustang Mach-E on the way and the excellent Jaguar I-Pace already here, it would be in Tesla's best interest to resolve the Model Y's obvious quality issues early on in its life. At the very least, new vehicles should be thoroughly checked before they're delivered. If Tesla can get this right, it would eliminate one of the few reasons to consider offerings from other brands.
