Here' s How The Kia Sorento' s Cool Blind Spot Tech Works

May. 09, 2020 12:11 PM ET by Martin Bigg Technology / 2 Comments Kia's new tech gives the driver a "second pair of eyes". It's been a couple of months since the all-new 2020 Kia Sorento debuted online with updated styling inspired by the larger Kia Telluride, electrified powertrains, and a more high-tech cabin. To demonstrate the Sorento's advanced tech, Kia has revealed the first details about its Blind-Spot View Monitor technology that gives the driver a "second pair of eyes" by eliminating left and right blind spots. This is the first time a Kia vehicle has been offered with this advanced driver assist in Europe, which is enabled by the Sorento's new fully-digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster. Kia's blind-spot view monitor enhances the drivers' vision either side of the car when driving on a highway and is linked with the car's turn signal. Kia Kia If the driver indicates to change lane with another vehicle hidden in their blind spot, the system displays a high-resolution video feed on the left or right side of the digital instrument cluster, overriding the speedometer, tachometer dial display, or the hybrid system gauge in Sorento Hybrid models, while still displaying the car's current speed. Providing the video feed are wide-angle, high-resolution cameras hidden in each door mirror housing, providing a wider viewing angle than the mirrors to give drivers a clear view of the other vehicle. Kia Kia Kia Kia's Blind-Spot View Monitor is offered as part of a package, which includes a Surround View Monitor, Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist, and a Bose Performance Series audio system. This package of technologies is available on Sorentos equipped with Kia's Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist function that helps prevent collisions with vehicles in a blind spot and intervenes if it detects an impending crash. While Kia hasn't confirmed if the Blind-Spot View Monitor will be available for the US-spec Sorento, there's a good chance it will be offered to customers in America since it's already available for the Kia Telluride and Kia K900.
