Toyota Wants More Performance Cars In The US

Following the reveal of the Toyota GR Yaris, enthusiasts around the world began clamoring for it to be available in global markets like the United States. Toyota even asked US enthusiasts if they wanted a new hot hatchback but with a price tag that would likely approach $40,000, we doubt the GR Yaris will be made available stateside. Instead, rumors have hinted that the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder producing 257 horsepower might find its way into the Corolla. Toyota has yet to officially confirm the rumor of a GR Corolla but in a recent conference call to discuss the 2021 Toyota GR Supra, Toyota Vice President and General Manager Jack Hollis confirmed that "more GR products will continue to come to the US." CarBuzz CarBuzz Toyota Of the GR models likely coming to the US market, new versions of the Supra will certainly be among them. Hollis says "we are pleased with the sales" of the 2020 Supra, which totaled just under 2,900 in 2019. "The goal is life cycle management," he said in reference to the 2021 model year update, which includes a new four-cylinder version and power increase on the six-cylinder. "There are other life cycle management tools that we believe will help us keep a flat line compared with the segment trend," he added. Hollis did not discuss what these tools include but we assume changes such as a manual transmission and a more track-focused variant are all being considered for future model years. Toyota says the four-cylinder car makes up around 40 percent of sales in Japan but it only expects it to account for 20 percent in the US. "We are just getting started with the four-cylinder," said Ben Haushalter, Toyota product planner, insinuating that a more track-focused model could also be in the cards. Toyota Toyota Toyota
