Watch An Electric BMW X6 Do The Rivian Tank Turn

Apr. 26, 2020 5:40 PM ET by Martin Bigg Video / 4 Comments The Rivian R1T isn't the only EV that can do tank turns. Remember when Rivian made headlines when it showed a video of the R1T electric pickup truck performing some crazy "tank turn" donuts to make Tesla jealous? The dizzying maneuver is possible thanks to the truck's four-motor setup that can be independently powered in different directions simultaneously. However, the industry has caught on. It turns out the Rivian R1T isn't the only electric vehicle capable of performing this cool stunt. In theory, any vehicle with four independent electric motors can do tank turns, so Elaphe Propulsion decided to put this theory to the test with a modified electric BMW X6. Elaphe Propulsion Elaphe Propulsion As you can see in a video shared by the company, the test was very successful. During winter testing in Sweden, the driver managed to spin the electric BMW X6 on the spot multiple times. No doubt the reduced traction on the snowy surface helped - we wouldn't recommend trying this on asphalt unless you want to destroy your tires. Likewise, Rivian demonstrated the R1T's tank-turning ability in slippery mud. To help the electric BMW X6 perform the tank turns, Elaphe Propulsion mounted four Elaphe L1500 gearless electric motors to each wheel. In total, this setup produces a combined 590 horsepower, and an amazing 4,425 lb-ft of torque. Wow! Elaphe Propulsion Elaphe Propulsion Elaphe Propulsion Despite weighing 5,300 pounds, the modified electric BMW X6 will accelerate from 0-62 mph in less than 4.9 seconds. For comparison, the stock BMW X6 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six gasoline engine with 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft in the base model, while the more potent X6 M Competition packs a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque on tap. 0-62 mph takes 3.7 seconds in the X6 M Competition. For now, Elaphe Propulsion's BMW X6 is a demonstration vehicle so it isn't available commercially, but it's still fun to watch it do some Rivian-rivaling tank turns.
