A Cheaper Porsche Taycan Is Coming
Apr. 21, 2020 10:45 AM ET by Jay Traugott Electric Vehicles / 2 Comments Time to go after more Tesla customers. If you're in the market for a new Porsche Taycan, you'll quickly discover the cheapest trim, the 4S, only begins at $103,800. No-one ever said Porsche's first-ever EV was going to be affordable. However, Porsche wants to attract as many customers as possible, especially those considering a less expensive Tesla Model S. According to UK's Car Magazine, a less expensive Taycan will soon be joining the lineup, slotted below the 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S. "There will be entry-level models coming off the Taycan," said Porsche R&D chief Dr. Michael Steiner. "There will be a rear-wheel-drive model with a smaller battery to make it more accessible price-wise, especially for markets that don't need 4wd - places like China, where weather conditions mean you don't need it." Porsche Porsche Porsche For now, Steiner refused to provide more precise pricing details, but a decent guess is a starting price of around $75,000 to $80,000. That'll put it directly in line with the base trim Model S Long Range Plus. The report goes on to predict that China will likely receive this so far unnamed Taycan trim first, followed by other markets. Will it come to the US? We don't see why it wouldn't, though customers living in the East Coast and parts of the Midwest known for their rough winters likely won't find it appealing. At the very least, they'll need an AWD option with a less powerful battery to keep costs down. Will that version ever come? Porsche Porsche Porsche Porsche Porsche has not directly admitted as much but, again, it would make sense. An AWD Taycan with less power and range will only expand its appeal for those who don't feel like spending six-figures. At the moment, Porsche and all other automakers are dealing with consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, such as factory closures, delayed supply chains, and, in some countries, closed dealerships. We'll likely know more about this less expensive Taycan in the coming months and whether or not it'll be offered with both RWD and AWD.
