C8 Corvette Z06 Will Have Over 600 Horsepower

Apr. 21, 2020 8:32 AM ET by Martin Bigg Sports Cars / 35 Comments And it will sound like a Ferrari. Deliveries of the new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray have finally started, and owners are quickly discovering that Chevrolet's new mid-engine masterpiece offers a lot of bang for your buck. Starting at $58,900, the C8 Corvette packs a 6.2-liter V8 cranking out 495 horsepower with the Z51 package, enabling the mid-engine sports car to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 2.9 seconds. However, one owner recently discovered the C8 Corvette is even faster than Chevrolet claims. Another managed to keep up with a Porsche 911 GT3 RS at the Willow Springs race track. If the entry-level C8 Stingray can achieve this level of performance, just imagine what the new Z06 Corvette will be capable of. Corvette Forum Corvette Forum Corvette Forum According to Car and Driver, the next-generation Corvette Z06 will be powered by a naturally aspirated DOHC 32-valve 5.5-liter V8. Yes, that's the same powerplant as the Corvette C8.R race car. It will also have a flat-plane crank like a Ferrari V8 and rev between 8,500 and 9,000 rpm, so it should sound sublime. While the current Stingray produces 490 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, the new Z06 is expected to have over 600 hp on tap, which will be sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. As for performance, the new Z06 is reportedly being benchmarked against the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, so it should be capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in around 2.7 seconds. Chevrolet Chevrolet Visually, the new Z06 will feature wider fenders, beefier brakes, retuned suspension tune, and upgraded powertrain cooling, while new active aerodynamics will keep it glued to the track. The next-generation Corvette Z06 is expected to go on sale in early 2021 as a 2022 model, but this could change since the coronavirus pandemic is causing mass disruption to the auto industry right now, delaying several new GM models. Pricing should start at around $85,000. It will be the first of several new higher-performance variants of the C8 Corvette. After the Z06, the new ZR1 will become the new range-topper of the mid-engine C8 family. Rumors suggest the new ZR1 will utilize a high-performance hybrid system to increase the output to 900 hp.
