Volkswagen Has Big Plans For Its Coolest Future EV

Apr. 15, 2020 4:50 PM ET by Jay Traugott Electric Vehicles / 4 Comments The fun will start in 2022. Volkswagen is committed to battery electric vehicles. If you need evidence, just look at the ID.3 hatchback and upcoming VW ID.4 crossover. Only the latter will be sold in the US, but there are additional ID-branded EVs on the way. One of them is the production version of the ID Buzz microbus concept. Due in 2022, we expect it to be sold in the US though in more limited numbers, at least at the beginning. Looking further ahead, VW has an even larger goal for the retro-designed microbus: a revival of the MVP segment. In Europe, the Golf-based Touran MVP was once extremely popular but new crossovers have hurt sales. Speaking to Autocar, VW's board member for R&D, Frank Welsch, hopes the reborn microbus will give this particular segment a much-needed boost and also change the whole MVP image. Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen "The Buzz has a lot of space. It's great-looking. The production version is even better than the concept. It's the best of the Touran," he said. The last vehicle sold in the US considered an MVP was the Mazda 5, which was never replaced after it was discontinued a few years ago. While Europe may be more primed for an MVP revival, the US is a less certain market because MVPs were never popular here in the first place. Still, Welsch remains optimistic. "MPVs are not over, although demand is going down a little bit. They need better design now. This is why the ID Buzz is quite emotional in design." CarBuzz Volkswagen Volkswagen VW had huge success when the New Beetle launched in 1997 in both the US and Europe, and it too featured retro styling. The ID Buzz, however, is a far more practical vehicle and, not to mention, emissions-free. Built on the same MEB architecture as the ID.4 and also upcoming Audi Q4 e-tron, the ID Buzz (a name change is possible) could achieve up to a 372-mile range and will offer both RWD and AWD setups, the latter producing an impressive 369 horsepower. The interior will likely offer some attractive configurable combinations to suit a number of lifestyles, including beachgoers and soccer moms alike.
