New Maserati MC20 Supercar Engine Revealed

Apr. 13, 2020 2:25 PM ET by Jay Traugott Supercars / 11 Comments Along with a newly rescheduled debut date. Despite the novel coronavirus upending everything these days, Maserati is still pressing ahead with plans to reveal its new mid-engined supercar. The Maserati MC20 was originally set to debut in May though this has now been pushed back to September. Hopefully, the world will have greater control over the pandemic. The Italian automaker hasn't divulged many details, though it has released a number of its own spy shots that clearly show its mid-engine setup and general lines. And yes, there is a fairly decent resemblance to the Alfa Romeo 4C. But which type of engine has Maserati chosen? According to Car and Driver, the MC20 will launch with a new twin-turbo V6 "rumored to make more than 600 horsepower, with torque routed through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic." Maserati Maserati The report didn't mention the engine's displacement. The first MC20s, however, aren't expected to be hybrids. Those will arrive later, perhaps as a Trofeo high-performance model. Maserati will also offer a battery-electric version, but that's still likely a few years out. Before any of those two alternative powertrain variants arrive, an MC20 cabrio will hit the scene in 2021. Pricing is a little hard to predict, but a starting figure somewhere around $150,000 to $160,000 is likely. Sound expensive? Hey, it's a Maserati, and even the soon to be discontinued Gran Turismo begins at nearly $135k in change. Maserati Maserati Maserati As previously noted, the MC20 prototype photos you're looking at here do bring to mind the Alfa 4C, and there's good reason for that. Rumor has it Maserati started with and upgraded the ultra-lightweight carbon fiber tub from the 4C. It's said to be now longer and wider. Not only would this make the MC20 larger than the 4C, it also creates the necessary space to accommodate a hybrid setup and batteries. Fingers crossed, we'll be getting our first round of MC20 answers this fall. Maserati Maserati Maserati Source Credits: Car And Driver
