With significantly less traffic clogging up the roads during the coronavirus pandemic, some drivers are taking advantage by using the desolate roads as a race track. Last month, police in Toronto caught a group of street racers driving at speeds of up to 106 mph on a freeway. But that's slow compared to how fast this guy was driving. In Michigan, the driver of a black 2016 Dodge Challenger also thought they would seize the opportunity and take their car for a performance run on a deserted highway late at night. Even though there was less traffic on the road, this is still obviously very dangerous. Clearly, the driver forgot that state troopers are still patrolling the streets looking for speeding drivers taking advantage of the quieter roads during the Covid-19 lockdown. As reported by MLive, the Challenger was clocked speeding at 180 mph in a 70 mph zone - that's 110 mph over the speed limit. This is the fastest speed Michigan police have ever recorded on the highway. Judging from the speed, the car must have been a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, which has a top speed of 199 mph. Keeping up with a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat wasn't going to be easy, but police further down the highway managed to get ahead of the speeder and force them to stop. This all happened at 11:45 pm southbound on the I-75 near Sigler Rd. in Monroe County. That may seem like a relatively small penalty, but the fine is only increased if a driver is charged for a separate moving violation. In this case, the driver was only charged for speeding and not reckless driving. Unsurprisingly, Michigan State troopers say they have seen more drivers breaking the speed limit during the coronavirus lockdown. "MSP has seen an increase with high speeds on roadways during this pandemic," the Michigan State Police wrote on Twitter.
