Mercedes-AMG Reveals The Future Of Turbocharging

The future of high-performance depends on innovative solutions that not only enable high amounts of horsepower, but also solid fuel efficiency. Switching to all-electric powertrains is not the immediate answer for a variety of reasons, though that day will come. For now, Mercedes-AMG has revealed a new piece of technology for upcoming series production models. Presenting the electric exhaust gas turbocharger, a Formula 1-derived technology which, according to AMG, "resolves the conflicting goals of a small, fast-reacting turbocharger, with relatively low peak performance, with a large turbocharger capable of high peak performance." It makes turbo lag a thing of the past. Here's how the system works: An ultra-slim (measuring just 1.6 inches) electronically-controlled electric motor is integrated on the turbocharger shaft, located between the turbine wheel on the exhaust side and the compressor wheel on the fresh air side. It drives the compressor wheel before taking in the exhaust gas flow. That's how the turbo lag is eliminated, allowing drivers to enjoy the combustion engine's must faster response when hitting the gas pedal. Another added benefit of the new eTurbo is higher torque at low engine speeds, meaning improved acceleration from a standstill. Equally impressive is that it can achieve up to 170,000 rpm and is compatible with AMG's 48-volt electrical system used in models such as the Mercedes-AMG E53. The combined turbocharger, electric motor, and electronics are all connected to the engine's cooling system in order to maintain temperature control. We reached out to the automaker and were told the following: "We don't have any further information to share about the new AMG eTurbo. Let's wait and see where this technology will be used first…Please stay tuned!" One possibility is the facelifted 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63, scheduled to debut tomorrow.
