2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Special Edition Looks Brilliant

Jun. 02, 2020 12:55 PM ET by Jay Traugott Special Editions / 8 Comments But it's not the Corolla we really want. Toyota deserves a lot of credit for launching a five-door hatchback version of its long-running Corolla because the bodystyle is typically more popular in overseas markets. Since its market return in 2019, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback continues to be a solid seller and today the automaker has unveiled the 2021 Corolla Hatchback Special Edition. But let's get one thing out of the way first: This is not the hot hatch we're desperately waiting for. Fortunately, Toyota is reportedly preparing such a vehicle, set to be called the GR Corolla, but it doesn't have a reveal date yet. It's expected to be an AWD hot hatch with around 257 horsepower courtesy of the turbocharged three-cylinder from the overseas-only GR Yaris. We can hardly wait. In the meantime, the Corolla Hatchback Special Edition is in the spotlight. Just 1,500 examples will be built and only one color will be offered, Supersonic Red. This color goes great with the contrasting 18-inch black wheels. Black trim replaces the chrome trim where it's normally found.

Under the hood, however, lies the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in the regular Corolla. It produces a total of 168 horsepower with power directed to the front wheels through either a CVT or a six-speed manual transmission. All 2021 Corollas come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes lane departure warning, automatic high beams, road sign assist, and a pre-collision assist system. For the new model year, Toyota has added rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring as options for the SE trim. Plus, it adds an extra six cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seat. Another update for 2021 is the return of the SE Nightshade Edition (not pictured), featuring blackout trim and blacked-out 18-inch alloy wheels. If you're interested in the limited-run Special Edition you see here, note that it's set to arrive in dealerships in late summer. Official pricing was not announced, but first come, first served.
